Welcome to the Pharmacy Technician Training Course.

This course helps you learn how to work as a pharmacy technician in Missouri.

You do not need pharmacy experience to start this course. We will teach you the basics step by step.

By the end of the course, you will:

Understand how a pharmacy works
Know how to help patients safely
Learn the skills needed for a pharmacy job
Be more prepared to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam

This is a beginner course, but it will help you grow into a skilled and confident technician.

Week 1: Introduction to Pharmacy Practice and Regulatory Framework
Review key regulations and involved parties for community pharmacy components. Introduction to technician abilities, duties, licensing and overall expectations. This quiz will be 30 questions of multiple choice and true/false.

Week 2: Community Pharmacy Workflow and Operations
This is an introduction into the actual process and operations of pharmacy workflow and typical day-to-day operations for a pharmacy technician. This exam will be 20 questions of multiple choice and true/false.

Week 3: Pharmacy Calculations I (Core Calculations)
These are core calculations that are baseline requirements pharmacy technicians in every setting should be competent within. There are additional components within this section that assist with proper knowledge for calculations, but will be covered in later topics, as well. This exam will be given additional time, but will still have 25 questions of calculations that are a combination of free text and multiple choice.

Week 4: Pharmacy Calculations II (Advanced Community Calculations)
This week's calculations are covering a variety of additional, more complex calculations. These are more difficult components that typically take longer than the core calculations in Week 3, but are also more common than some would prefer... This exam will be given additional time, but will still have 25 questions of calculations that are a combination of free text and multiple choice.

Week 5: Controlled Substances and Diversion
This is a section solely for controlled substances and how to properly operate within the aspects of various state and federal law regarding such. This section will have a multiple choice quiz of 25 questions.

Week 6: Insurance and Billing Fundamentals
This section is an overview of insurance billing fundamentals and the varieties of options with components involving third-party payer systems. Additional codes and aspects of knowledge are included that typically only revolve around third-party payer conversations. This exam will have 25 questions with matching and multiple choice options.

Week 7: Foundations of Pharmacology
This category covers several of the most common aspects of prescription medications, what categorizes them, and general knowledge of prescription medications. This exam will be 25 questions of matching and multiple choice.

Week 8: Drug Information I
This week covers a lot of detailed information regarding general categories of health organ system(s) or primary condition(s). The overview of the organ and condition components are meant to be introductions into the medication classes, and to better understand how specific classes are designed for unique scenarios or may lend to more side effects than other drug classifications. This section will have an exam of 50 questions with multiple choice and matching.

Week 11: Drug Information IV
This category covers several of the most common Top 100 prescribed medications (although some will be missed, this covers beyond the top 100 in some categories, as well), as an extension of Week 7's medications into the next most common drug categories. This exam will be 50 questions of matching and multiple choice.

Week 12: Safety, HIPAA, and OSHA Compliance
This section is all about information and workplace safety, as we hold numerous aspects of both that are considered in our workforce. As such, there are tons of information beyond this training, and each site may have additional training or policies needing reviewed, but this will provide a basic understanding that is necessary for entry-level knowledge for pharmacy technicians. This quiz will be 50 questions with additional time for matching and multiple choice due to the variety of information available for these topics.

Week 13: Quality Assurance and Risk Management
This section is a scattered mixture of topics that is an overall coverage of several key components that improve overall quality and risk management of any pharmacy setting. These components can make or break pharmacy technician quality through knowledge and the ability to easily identify areas of concern and access that will improve the overall operations. This exam will be 50 questions with extended time for matching and multiple choice questions due to the excessive opportunities for review.

Week 14: Advanced Community Practice and Professionalism
This section is an introduction into advanced community practice and general professionalism components of pharmacies. Today, pharmacies must diversify beyond typical dispensing to remain a viable option in their communities, and healthcare is riddled with care gaps needing filled. Retail pharmacies are commonly poised to fill those gaps and expand options into their communities, with a limited access of additional opportunities for pharmacy technicians. This exam will be 25 questions of multiple choice.

Week 15: Comprehensive Retail and Final Examination
This section is set aside for time to review prior information and provide extra time to review and study. This exam is a comprehensive examination that will be cumulative as a portion of each of the prior 14 sections and 100 questions. You will be given a total of 2 weeks (weeks 15 & 16) to complete your cumulative exam, so spend your time well. Generally, this exam is set to average: 40% over Drug Information; 25% over Calculations; 15% over Weeks 1, 2, 5 & 6; 10% each over Weeks 12 & 13. There may be a few questions as outliers that alter this average, with a question of two thrown in from Week 14, but this is the primary component of layout for the final exam.
